1. Drive less and earn a discount

If you drive less than 7,500 miles per year, you may qualify for a low-mileage discount on your auto insurance. And, some companies offer a commuter discount if you use public transportation during the week.

2. Don't use your car for business purposes

Some insurance companies will add a "business use surcharge" or increase your auto insurance premium as your annual mileage increases. But, if you must use your car for business, be sure to tell your company, so that your daily business travel is covered.

3. Increase your deductible

You might save as much as 10 to 15% if you increase your deductible from $250 to $500. But, remember that you'll be required to pay the larger deductible upfront if you have an accident.

4. Keep an eye on your credit report

Your credit history is one of many "risk factors" that most auto insurance companies evaluate when setting rates, in states where permissible by law. Paying your bills on time and maintaining a solid credit history will help keep your home and auto insurance rates lower.

5. Drive safely

You may be eligible for a price break on your car insurance policy if you have no accidents or traffic violations for a specified period, usually three years. Even a single speeding ticket can increase your auto insurance rates 5 to 10% depending on your state.

6. Buy a low-profile car

Cars are rated on a risk scale for auto insurance purposes. In general, sports cars and other high-performance vehicles are higher risk because they are common targets for thieves, and statistically, the people who own them tend to drive more recklessly.

7. Move

If you live in a rural community with little crime and traffic congestion, your auto insurance premium will generally be lower than if you live in an urban area where your car is more likely to be stolen, vandalized, or involved in an accident.

8. Keep your car in a garage

Cars parked in garages are less likely to be stolen, vandalized, or struck by other vehicles. And, you may get a slight premium reduction.

9. Install safety or anti-theft devices

Auto Insurance companies offer discounts for anti-lock brakes, automatic seat belts, airbags and more. Car alarms and tracking systems may also get you an insurance discount.

10. Shop around

OK, it might go without saying, but your current auto insurance company might not be the best one for you in the future! We recommend researching your options 30 to 45 days before your current policy is set to renew, especially if you have not shopped recently. Fact: Insurance.com customers reported annual auto insurance savings of $538 a year in April 2009. Your savings may vary.

This is one of the all-time classics. You've been meaning to get comprehensive coverage for awhile now, but never got around to it. Unfortunately, a tree branch just fell on your car, breaking the windshield and severely denting the hood. So, you call your auto insurance company and add comprehensive coverage, then file a claim a few days later. The problem? During the investigation, the SIU finds out you started calling body shops to get estimates before you had comprehensive coverage. Not a good situation for you.

These are just a few of the ways an insurance company's SIU can catch fraud. They also work with law enforcement, state departments of insurance, and the justice system to identify insurance fraud and assist in prosecuting the offenders. Many companies have computer programs that flag suspicious claims for review by the SIU. If you're caught, penalties can range from denial of your claims, to cancellation of your car insurance policy, to possible fines or jail time. In other words, it's not worth it.

If you suspect a person or group is committing insurance fraud, you can report it to the police, your insurance company, or the National Insurance Crime Bureau. You might even get a reward.

Insurance fraud is becoming more frequent as people look for "creative" ways to make money in the struggling economy. Insurance companies find that people file more claims in a down economy, often for smaller amounts. And, fraud is an increasing problem. With so many claims for car insurance companies to process, it may seem like a fraudulent claim can slip through unnoticed. Not so.

Just like the team on CSI uses advanced techniques to analyze evidence and figure out what happened, an insurance company's Special Investigations Unit or SIU—which often includes reps with law enforcement experience—conducts a thorough investigation to detect fraud. (Please note that Insurance.com reminds consumers that insurance fraud is illegal and a very bad idea.) Here are a few things fraudsters try to get away with—and why it's rare that they will:

I have just read a lot of the report of the (Irish) Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (here) and am absolutely sickened. If true (and there seems little doubt of this from the consistency of accounts by witness after witness, and just as tellingly, the stringent efforts made by the “Christian Brothers” and the Catholic Church first to prevent this report from seeing the light of day and then to delay it) this was far, far worse than anything I had expected. The depiction of Catholic laundries where young girls and women are employed seemingly as slave labour, as shown in the film The Magdalene Sisters was bad enough - apparently Catholic laundries still operate in India and other countries, although they stopped operating in Ireland about 10-15 years ago - but this was even worse, with endemic physical, sexual and emotional abuse of already vulnerable children by priests and nuns, which was condoned by the church authorities and the Irish education department. Orphans in particular were singled out for the worse abuse, because the priests and nuns knew that they had no relatives to complain to. It confirms what atheists like me have been saying: “For a good man to do evil, it takes religion”.

It is time for men and women everywhere to take stock, and realise: what is religion other than superstition? In what way is any religion different from astrology?

In the UK, we do not allow the practice of African witchcraft with its associated sacrificing of animals to appease the African gods, but we do allow several other religions, including Roman Catholicism, the Anglican Church, Islam, Hunduism etc. to practice. Where is the logic in that? How can you draw the line between one religion and another, between religion and superstition?

How many wars would be prevented if we all had the courage, and humanity, to stand up and renounce all religions as superstitious wishful thinking? How many wars would have been either prevented or at the very least foreshortened without religion? Protestant versus Catholic in Northern Ireland, Shia Mulsim v Sunni Muslim in the Iran/Iraq war, the 2003 Iraq war (which seems largely to have been entered into because George W Bush and our own Tony Blair both “do God” and believed that He was telling them it was the right thing to invade Iraq?). How long would the Middle East wars have lasted if the children of that area had not been brainwashed into believing that Islam, Christianity and Judaism were (depending on the accident of where they happened to have been born) respectively the “one true religion”?

The next time a religious person tries to tell you that religions do more good than evil, ask them to read the above report, and explain how the most shocking behaviour and abuse of vulnerable children could have happened over more than fifty years (and probably before that), with (according to the report itself) the full knowledge of both the Roman Catholic Church and the Irish State?

It is time for a secular revolution in Ireland: no longer must the state be subservient to a superstitious and discredited historical institution.

“This episode leaves a terrible stain on the whole nation and stinks to high heaven.

From the Catholic Church, who were dishing out the abuse, to the State which was charged with the care of these children. From the civil servants who… knew what was going on but were not brave enough to betray their political masters, to the parents who sent young girls away to hide their pregnancy so they could hold their heads high in their local communities is just disgraceful not to mention the height of hypocrisy.

Teachers, doctors, nurses, relations, people delivering milk; anyone who came into contact with these kids should hold their heads in shame.

Any time we feel like saying we are proud to be Irish we should think of these kids and think again.”

The worst thing about the report is that apparently no one is going to be prosecuted as a result of it, because the Christian Brothers won a court case in 2004 demanding that all names in the report be kept anonymous, even in cases where individuals had already been convicted of child abuse!

Headquartered in Melville, New York, AutoOne Insurance was formed in 2001 to provide limited assignment distribution (LAD) service to New York's automobile insurance companies. Since its inception, AutoOne, a division of the OneBeacon Insurance Group, has grown rapidly and currently provides a broad spectrum of automobile insurance products from Assigned Risk to voluntary automobile offerings, including private passenger, physical damage and unique take-out policies that help to depopulate the New York Assigned Risk Plan pool.
The Assigned Risk business is a difficult and unique segment of the overall auto insurance industry. Insurance companies are "assigned" a certain percentage of the assigned risk business through their state's auto insurance plan (AIP). Because this type of insurance may not be their core business, they can opt to transfer that business to a LAD servicing carrier for a fee. Managing the LAD business can be as complex as the business itself. ...

You are entering a wild, untamed world when you want to obtain reliable information regarding insurance topics. After entering your search information you might find an author's article about a prospecting technique, claiming it will jumpstart your ability to get presentations. The next article you read tells you not to use that outdated technique to start with, Who is right?
Did you even wonder why there are so few books written about insurance? The answer is relatively simple. There are too few surviving agents that want to share their self learned techniques with the constantly revolving new agent base.
The insurance company reps are in a constant state of confusion. They are so brainwashed that little attention is given to information that will prolong their career and earn them some money. A lot of articles (about insurance leads and others) are written by a lead producing company wanting you to buy their product. Top authors put spreading tips and techniques first, and do not write their article like an advertisement.
Agents and marketers searching for insurance selling marketing articles have a hard time finding a good source. The source, which is often an article directory, might not even have a category for insurance, opting to go for the much broader finance category. The few sources that provide insurance related articles broken down in a dozen classifications know much about insurance. There may be a category for articles about the sale of umbrella policies, while insurance leads are completely overlooked.
